Time for something new.

I have a special relationship with smaller, more unusual ships and kits, and I wanted to build something "simple" without having to think too much. Spoiler alert: the plan didn't work out at all :-D

In my stash, I still had this small, inexpensive 1:72 kit with a printed hull from Modelship Dockyard. The design seemed interesting and the finished hull promised easy construction... Anticipated, that was a misjudgement :-P


History:

The Axel Thorsen was constructed in 1810 as a Naval gun-schooner for the Royal Danish/Norwegian Navy. Built from pine, the vessel measured approximately 56 Norwegian feet (approx. 19 meters) in length with a displacement of 74 tons. It was armed with two 24-pdr swivel guns and typically crewed by 45 sailors. This class of schooner was designed to counter the British blockade of the Norwegian coastline during the Napoleonic Wars, primarily tasked with escorting merchant ships from the White Sea to Norway. In its early service, the Axel Thorsen participated in multiple convoy missions and harbor defense operations.

Following the Napoleonic Wars, the ship continued to serve for decades in diverse roles, including coastal surveying, Arctic scientific expeditions, and marine resource harvesting. Its final chapter came in 1872 during an Arctic exploration when it was trapped by ice and abandoned in Tsjesjekaja Bay near Cape Kanin.

Axel Thorsen epitomized 19th-century maritime endeavors—from wartime defense and sovereignty assertion to Arctic exploration and resource exploitation. Its dual roles reflect the era’s complexities


The Kit:

At first glance, the kit makes a good impression. I prefer pear wood, but cherry is also a good wood. Turned brass gun barrels, high-quality blocks, photo-etched parts and some resin parts (3D printed) round off the picture. A 1:1 side view of the model is included as the only plan. The instructions can be downloaded from drydockmodelsandparts.com, for example.

Unfortunately, it becomes clear as early as step 3 of the instructions that something is seriously wrong. The instructions – as will become increasingly clear – are unfortunately a disaster. Parts are not mentioned, not named, look completely different from the laser-cut parts, are supposed to be installed in a way that is not possible, and are sometimes listed in an "unfortunate" order.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a fundamental problem with lots, not all, Chinese kits. Which is a shame. Wonderful little kits are designed, but it seems that no one is willing to go through a couple of beta build iterations to test whether, for example, the instructions are correct and what can and, above all, must be optimised. It's a great pity.


Anyway, challenge accepted.

The inner planking should be made with 1 mm cherry veneer. There's no way to get all the bends with nthese shor parts – the wood is simply too thick! Other manufacturers rightly use 0.5 mm veneer for this. I switched to this and made the parts with 0.5 mm pear veneer.

Another issue was the waterway. According to the instructions, it should be glued to the deck, which is nonsense, if only because of the fishing that has been done. With a 3D-printed hull, you would expect everything to fit perfectly, but that is not the case. The waterway had to be laboriously adapted to the shape of the printed case.

The keels false keel is not mentioned in the instructions and no part number is shown, great (I mean I don't care ... haha).

It was a very frustrating start, and I was undecided whether to start a build log because there was a possibility that I would abandon the project. So much for simple and relaxing... :-D

Unfortunately, one thing I notice again and again is the inadequate woodworking. In my opinion, it is really important to carefully remove EVERY laser burn marks, not just the cut edges but from the surfaces too. It is also important to sand the wood clean and - it's a matter of taste I know but Pear deserves it -  to oil visible areas. This is the only way to achieve a homogeneous overall impression that remains true to scale.

Don't rush, take your time, DON'T use a rotating tool! It will remove to much and it will do scratches you can't sand away easily. Exception are the inner parts of the frames IF you are able to do it very carefully!

Anyway now lets do some wooddust :-P

I like these small kits. It's not easy to build, lots of patience is needed but the result is always pleasing. Falconet, like other Russian manufacturers, always offers beautiful small models here that produce great results with high-quality materials and a reasonable price.

42-foot longboat with 24-pound carronade (1841).

Ships of the 1st rank of the Russian Imperial Navy, such as the Twelve Apostles, Paris, Grand Duke Constantine and others were equipped with large 20-oar longboats 42 feet long, 12 feet wide, and 4 feet 4 inches deep.
In particular, a 20-weight longboat for the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, 120-weight. The ship "Twelve Apostles" was designed by the head of the Nikolaev Corps of Naval Engineers, Colonel I.D. Vorobyov, construction work was led by corps captain S.I. Chernyavsky.
Commander 120-gun. ship "Twelve Apostles" captain 2nd rank V.A. Kornilov, the hero of the Battle of Navarino, enlisted the support of Vice Admiral M.P. Lazarev, to equip the longboat not according to the 1840 State, but with a “Plymouth boat”. Such sailing weapons, due to the larger sail area, allowed the longboat to develop high speeds comparable to yachts and tenders, which guaranteed the speed of landing, transportation of cargo and people. The presence of a 24-pound cast iron carronade with a constant ammunition load of 80 cores provided the landing force with the necessary fire support. In addition to the rowers, according to documents, the longboat could accommodate another 160 landing troops with full weapons. This made the longboat a separate combat unit.

In addition to the routine daily work of transporting people, delivering cargo and delivering anchors, the longboat participated in naval and boat exercises and races under sail and oars, and was actively used in landing operations of the Black Sea Fleet in the Caucasus. In 1847, the longboat was used to load ground troops onto a squadron for transportation from Odessa to Sevastopol. In 1849-1851 The longboat was used for reconnaissance during the cruising of the ship "Twelve Apostles" along the Abkhazian coast.
During the defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855. was assigned to the 24-hour division under the main command of Rear Admiral Wolfe to repel possible attacks by enemy fireships from the sea and to cruise no further than the line of sunken ships to observe enemy rowing ships.

Master Korabel is using 3D printing parts in their newer kits. The quality of the prints is very good.




Same for the, already blackened, metal parts.










Last but not least the usual brass wire and a small wood dovel.





Now it's on to the next bag with lots of small parts. Anchor, flag, cannonballs, the caronade, stanchions, more blocks and more 3D printed parts.











Same for the carronade and the additional parts shown.














The Canon Balls






The last bag includes the Stanchions, more very small blocks and 3D printed parts like thimbles and ... eybolts with rings printed as one part, nice!













And now to the wood, with one exception everything is made of pear wood. Master Korabel knows how to laser wood in excellent quality, few burn marks, fine and clean cuts, everything lasered cleanly. It doesn't get any better than this!

Conclusion

Phewhh to be honest I was blown away by the quality of this kit. It was a pleasure to unpack and look at every single part. In my opinion, the Russian manufacturers are among the best, both in terms of kit design and the high quality of manufacture. In addition, there are all these little things that you just want to throw away in other kits that are just right here, blocks, metal parts, cannonball etc. The only drawback, as so often, is unfortunately the rigging thread. I would like to point out that there would be potential to add a few more parts in 3D printing, but that is criticism at the very highest level. Nevertheless, this kit is one of the best I have had the pleasure of holding in my hands.

I would like to point out that there would be potential to add a few more parts in 3D printing, but that is criticism at the very highest level. Nevertheless, this kit is one of the best I have had the pleasure of holding in my hands.

Torpedo boats of this type were intended to arm the battleships and cruisers of the British fleet and were the standard picket boat of the fleet until 1906.

It should be noted that the instructions, which are in Chinese, are absolutely inadequate. It is strongly recommended that you download the free plans from MSB (http://modelshipbuilder.com/e107_images/...sm1-48.pdf) and study the building steps thoroughly.

It should also be noted that my kit was cut with a laser that was not super well adjusted. The so-called kerf is very large and requires consideration if you want to have beautiful joints It is certainly not a kit for a beginner and you need patience and calm.

I can also only advise you to practice on leftover pieces how best to remove the burn marks from the laser and then to do this thoroughly.

The materials used are of very good quality and also the laser work is very good. Always problematic are the Chinese instructions, these are kept very short, leave a lot open and are ... in Chinese.

Description

Hoy is a relatively small offshore sailing ship. Most of these ships are single-masted and weigh about 20-70 tons. Most of them were sloop rigged and the mainsail could be fitted with or without a boom. These ships were favored by merchants and the Royal Navy and were used for various jobs. Some were specially built to transport fresh water, gunpowder, or ballast. Others are used for tax services, or for laying buoys or measuring work. Of course, the most common job is to transport passengers and goods. These ships are like taxis. Passengers on the shore can shout "ahoy there!" to stop these ships, so the ship type "Hoy" is also named.

We used the high-resolution scanned drawings preserved by the National Maritime Museum as the base of design to ensure the accuracy of the kit. Combined with dozens of relevant ship type drawings, a large number of books, and relevant models, we were able to restore most of the details of the ship.

As a 66-foot flat hoy, Hayling is one of the larger ships of its kind. The ship was built in a small shipyard near the famous Portsmouth Harbour in Britain. The ship's name Hayling also comes from Hayling Island next to Portsmouth Harbour. It is mainly used to transport timber between ports so it has a hatch.

Conclusion

It is a highly interesting kit of an unusual smaller ship with mostly high quality materials for an incredibly reasonable price of $298.00. Basically a 100% buy recommendation but with a few drawbacks I need to mention.
