42-foot longboat with 24-pound carronade (1841).

Ships of the 1st rank of the Russian Imperial Navy, such as the Twelve Apostles, Paris, Grand Duke Constantine and others were equipped with large 20-oar longboats 42 feet long, 12 feet wide, and 4 feet 4 inches deep.
In particular, a 20-weight longboat for the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, 120-weight. The ship "Twelve Apostles" was designed by the head of the Nikolaev Corps of Naval Engineers, Colonel I.D. Vorobyov, construction work was led by corps captain S.I. Chernyavsky.
Commander 120-gun. ship "Twelve Apostles" captain 2nd rank V.A. Kornilov, the hero of the Battle of Navarino, enlisted the support of Vice Admiral M.P. Lazarev, to equip the longboat not according to the 1840 State, but with a “Plymouth boat”. Such sailing weapons, due to the larger sail area, allowed the longboat to develop high speeds comparable to yachts and tenders, which guaranteed the speed of landing, transportation of cargo and people. The presence of a 24-pound cast iron carronade with a constant ammunition load of 80 cores provided the landing force with the necessary fire support. In addition to the rowers, according to documents, the longboat could accommodate another 160 landing troops with full weapons. This made the longboat a separate combat unit.

In addition to the routine daily work of transporting people, delivering cargo and delivering anchors, the longboat participated in naval and boat exercises and races under sail and oars, and was actively used in landing operations of the Black Sea Fleet in the Caucasus. In 1847, the longboat was used to load ground troops onto a squadron for transportation from Odessa to Sevastopol. In 1849-1851 The longboat was used for reconnaissance during the cruising of the ship "Twelve Apostles" along the Abkhazian coast.
During the defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855. was assigned to the 24-hour division under the main command of Rear Admiral Wolfe to repel possible attacks by enemy fireships from the sea and to cruise no further than the line of sunken ships to observe enemy rowing ships.

I personally like the Master Korabel blocks and the coffee pins are of very high quality (as almost everything in this kit).




Master Korabel is using 3D printing parts in their newer kits. The quality of the prints is very good.




Same for the, already blackened, metal parts.










Last but not least the usual brass wire and a small wood dovel.





Now it's on to the next bag with lots of small parts. Anchor, flag, cannonballs, the caronade, stanchions, more blocks and more 3D printed parts.

The Canon Balls






The last bag includes the Stanchions, more very small blocks and 3D printed parts like thimbles and ... eybolts with rings printed as one part, nice!













And now to the wood, with one exception everything is made of pear wood. Master Korabel knows how to laser wood in excellent quality, few burn marks, fine and clean cuts, everything lasered cleanly. It doesn't get any better than this!

Conclusion

Phewhh to be honest I was blown away by the quality of this kit. It was a pleasure to unpack and look at every single part. In my opinion, the Russian manufacturers are among the best, both in terms of kit design and the high quality of manufacture. In addition, there are all these little things that you just want to throw away in other kits that are just right here, blocks, metal parts, cannonball etc. The only drawback, as so often, is unfortunately the rigging thread. I would like to point out that there would be potential to add a few more parts in 3D printing, but that is criticism at the very highest level. Nevertheless, this kit is one of the best I have had the pleasure of holding in my hands.

HMS Granado was launched at Harwich in 1742, during the War of the Austrian Succession as a sloop-of-war. During this war she captured a French privateer. During the Seven Years' War she served both as a sloop and as a bomb vessel, and participated in naval operations off the coast of France and in the West Indies. When the Navy sold her in 1763 she became the mercantile Prince Frederick. Around 1775 she became the whaler Prudence, sailing in the British northern whale fishery. Around 1781 she became a government transport and was wrecked on 20 May 1782 on the coast of India.

Let's look deeper at this kit and start with the perfectly lasered plywood for the building Jig.





Starting with the thickest, 4,2 mm pearwood sheet 1 - 11 consisting all the parts needed for the frames











Then there are a variety of other sheets in different thicknesses including a cradle









There are also some sheets with pre lasered planks in pearwood





And last but not least 3 small sheets in ebony







Conclusion

The Granado seems to be a popular model in China, as there are already various kits available. The Cross Section presented here in 1:72 scale is certainly interesting in terms of size, but also the really reasonable price.
The materials used are of very good quality and also the laser work is very good. Always problematic are the Chinese instructions, these are kept very short, leave a lot open and are ... in Chinese.

One advantage here is that the kit is based on the free plans of a ModelShipBuilder project and was created in cooperation with the MSB. Description

HMS Granado was launched at Harwich in 1742, during the War of the Austrian Succession as a sloop-of-war. During this war she captured a French privateer. During the Seven Years' War she served both as a sloop and as a bomb vessel, and participated in naval operations off the coast of France and in the West Indies. When the Navy sold her in 1763 she became the mercantile Prince Frederick. Around 1775 she became the whaler Prudence, sailing in the British northern whale fishery. Around 1781 she became a government transport and was wrecked on 20 May 1782 on the coast of India.

Description

Hoy is a relatively small offshore sailing ship. Most of these ships are single-masted and weigh about 20-70 tons. Most of them were sloop rigged and the mainsail could be fitted with or without a boom. These ships were favored by merchants and the Royal Navy and were used for various jobs. Some were specially built to transport fresh water, gunpowder, or ballast. Others are used for tax services, or for laying buoys or measuring work. Of course, the most common job is to transport passengers and goods. These ships are like taxis. Passengers on the shore can shout "ahoy there!" to stop these ships, so the ship type "Hoy" is also named.

We used the high-resolution scanned drawings preserved by the National Maritime Museum as the base of design to ensure the accuracy of the kit. Combined with dozens of relevant ship type drawings, a large number of books, and relevant models, we were able to restore most of the details of the ship.

As a 66-foot flat hoy, Hayling is one of the larger ships of its kind. The ship was built in a small shipyard near the famous Portsmouth Harbour in Britain. The ship's name Hayling also comes from Hayling Island next to Portsmouth Harbour. It is mainly used to transport timber between ports so it has a hatch.

History

The name of Bounty, a frigate of the British Navy, is permanently tied to her captain Bligh and to the vicissitudes which caused the crew to mutiny. First of all, there is the deck of the Black Queen with all planks pre-lasered in a beautiful pear. And this in a beginner kit. Great move!






Other boards are laser-cut in beech. But there is nothing wrong with this either. Very very less laser char. All is clean and crisp.





And see the dowels for masts and spars.





And last but not least, for all those who would like to make sails, a very nice fine-meshed fabric is included.





The multilingual manual should make it easy for beginners to build a wonderful little model with a lot of fun.









Conclusion

He sent me some samples of wood he is offering for modelers. Best wood I ever got. Finest Boxwood, Pear, Alaskan Yellow Cedar and Pear. The so-called Swiss pear in light and dark is also available in the range. In addition, the strips are also offered already caulked :-)

Modelers Central were so kind to sent me their Modellers Shipyards Kit "Mary Byrne 1826 Admiralty Model" in Scale 1:48 for reviewing. 





History

Ketches were river & coastal traders brought to the colonies of Australia by Europeans in the early nineteenth century that evolved into designs that suited Australian coastal & river waters. The vessels had two masts and a simple sets of sails so they could be managed by crews of three seafarers.

Ketches were integral to Australia’s maritime history. They connected the city and country before the advent of road and rail. The ketch is quite manoeuvrable in light winds and with a shallow draught they were well suited to negotiate the coastal rivers to transport farm products, grain and minerals to the city and shipping goods and supplies to isolated river and coastal communities along the extended coast of east and south eastern Australia.

The ketch Mary Byrne is named after a young Irish girl. In 1826 Mary Byrne was sentenced in Dublin to seven years and transported to the colony of New South Wales from Dublin. Her crime was stealing a lace handkerchief. Mary’s mother Jane appealed in writing to the local authorities to save her daughter on the grounds that she was an only child and her father was dead. This was all to no avail. Mary was transported on the Lady Rowena, which left Dublin in January 1826 and arrived in Sydney in May. The ship carried 102 females from Ireland, most transported for 7 years for minor crimes.

Upon arrival in Sydney Mary was assigned to Mr Still, at Bunkers Hill as a servant. The Sydney Gazette reported that Mary had an argument with a fellow worker in the kitchen which resulted in the police being summoned. Her employer Mrs Still came to her defence saying she was a church going lass and engaged to a policeman. Mary, again, found herself in trouble when another employer refused to pay her and Mary confronted the woman demanding her wages. This time, Mary received 3 months in the Female Factory at Parramatta. There is no doubt Mary was a feisty lass, for upon sentencing Mary was heard to state that she didn’t care as she’d just have to sweep a few floors.

Mary eventually set-up house in the Rocks area of Sydney with John Burke, himself a convict who was issued with a ticket of leave. John Burke was a blacksmith, by trade but did serve some time as a police officer. The 1828 census shows that Mary and John had a daughter called Margaret, but sadly there is no further evidence of her existence. In about 1832 they had a son called John, who went on to marry Mary Coe at St Mary’s church in 1856. Mary Coe too, was descended from convicts.

We next hear of Mary Byrne, when she was admitted to the Sydney General Hospital in May 1842. She died soon after of Erysipelas, which was also written up in the Sydney Gazette. The government records of Mary’s autopsy state that she had a ‘visitation from God’. Mary died, a convict, when she was just 36 years of age. Mary Byrnes descendants lived in The Rocks for well over 100 years and continue to live in Australia today.

The Admiralty model kit of the Mary Byrne 1826 is expertly designed and built by John Staib - master model ship designer and builder.

As with all new release model ship kits from Modellers Shipyard the frames of the kit have laser scored fairing lines that ensure the fairing of the frames is easy, accurate and symmetrical – this feature is unique to Modellers Shipyard designed kits

The kit comes complete with quality fittings, clean and accurate laser cut parts and highly detailed English written building instructions with color photos of every step of the kit’s construction.

The Mary Byrne model is dedicated to Mary Byrne and her descendants.

Essential for a good kit are the instructions. There are no real plans, they are not missed, but a great big size Photo Instruction Booklet.

In my opinion it would have been nicer to make the booklet of a smaller size so that it fits in the box without getting folded ;-)























Conclusion

This is a great kit of the Mary Byrne. A wonderful example of how dedicated companies with a lot of love for detail can develop wonderful, affordable, new innovative model kits these days. 

The really first-class and well lasered woods connected with the great illustrated instructions - they do fulfil their task well and leave few to no questions unanswered - round this kit off. 

All parts are really very good up to high quality and you can feel the attention made to details in this kit.

It is certainly a question of price that the frames, which are visible, are all made of plywood. You have to like it, it's not perfect, or think about how you can add color to the frames, red or white as an example. I can understand that solid wood (yellow cedar maybe?) was not used, as it would certainly be considerably more expensive to produce the kit. And yes, the framework is also rather exemplary, not historically correct but I am sure that beginners will enjoy it.

What is nice is the potential for kit bashers with the Mary Byrne. So much possibilities to extend the Interior or else :-)

I can't say for sure if its a beginner or intermediate kit (according to the manufacturer) but either way it is worth to build it and the instructions are excellent. Great job done by Modellers Shipyard!

The Belle Poule is school schooner of French navy. The Belle Poule together with her sister ship Etoile was launched at shipyard Féchamp at Normandy on 8 February 1932. The Belle Poule is 37,5m long and has displacement 225tons. The ship is able to sail up to 12.5 knots with using of sails and up to 9 knots if she is powered by diesel engine.

Paperwork. Essential for ever good kit are the instructions and plans. As usually for Dusek you get the instruction in different languages. In this kit they are french but online you can download english and czech as well. 





The instructions are well done and an intermediate Modeller should have no problem at all.

Last but not least there is one big of sheet showing the modell in 1:1.









Conclusion

A really nice kit designed by Daniel Dusek. The lasered prespilled planks make it much easier to plank a more complex hull like that of the "La Belle Poule". All parts are made of high-quality materials and you can see the attention to detail in this Dusek kit as well. The instructions leave few to no questions unanswered, the plans are drawn in detail and printed in a great way. 


Dusek Ship Kits currently lists this model for €369, and I think that represents really good value for money for this nice kit.

History

The Belle Poule is school schooner of French navy. The Belle Poule together with her sister ship Etoile was launched at shipyard Féchamp at Normandy on 8 February 1932. The Belle Poule is 37,5m long and has displacement 225tons. The ship is able to sail up to 12.5 knots with using of sails and up to 9 knots if she is powered by diesel engine.
