As I wrote, six hinges were still missing, e.g. to replaced ... the ones at the companionway Wink

So I built these today - luckily I had exactly 6 spare hinges Big Grin

Today it was time to give Syren her name .. I already planed this for a while but had kinda fear about it as this is and was a tricky part.

I did not use the photo etched parts but some decals.

The result, not perfect but maybe that's exactly how it should look ... not perfect Wink

After a lot of thinking I am trying a different approch to to the timbers.

I saw this kind of construction on some ships also it might not be correct for the Syren, anyway it is a way to to the timbers so that I feel kinda good with Wink

It's not finished yet, the lower timbers are missing but to show the idea and the progress some pictures Wink

To mention is that I go with the original drawings so only three timbers.

Ok, today I could finish the "rail timber big headache"-stuff. This was the most challenging stuff right now in this build and it's far from perfect ... but ... no, no deconstruction here Big Grin

As meditation inbetween the timbers I nailed the gratings ... Big Grin

Okidoki, after this major step more work is to do ... kinda boring work .. haha ... gun rigging .. hmpf ... this is very timeconsuming cause of the way the knot foir the breeching rope is made ...

Inbetween a bit work on the bowsprit.

And some more pictures Wink

I'll try to show how I made the knot, it's just a matter of patience as it takes a while, and good glasses Wink I use 0.63mm for the breeching rope and 0.1mm for the seizing.

CA for the first part:

Then I glue the seizing with CA.

Do the seizing.

Then the 2nd part. Turn the rope to form the eye and glue with CA.

Do the seizing for the eye.

Finished Smile I use Dafi's eyebolts combined with a microwasher to make it more solid.

The two finished longguns.

cheers,

Dirk

Next will be working out the rudder pendants.

6 breeching ropes done, 12 to go ...

Today I got my micro chain for the rudder muuuch better Smile

Back to breeching ropes ... hmpf .....

I could finish the breeching ropes .... don't wanna think about the rest of the gun rigging .... haha ...

I love the line of this ship ... so elegant ...

Hej all,

I tried a lot of different combinations of thread for the serving but still not really satisfied, also my stropped blocks do not make me really happy, but it's the best I can do atm at this scale ... and tbh I hate stropping blocks .... Big Grin

I did the rigging for the steering mechanism and to secure the Binnacle.

The rudder "would" turn ... would, if the rudder coat would not block it .. Wink

As I like details, there is on related to the anchor cable (and inspired by Dafi Wink) which is rarely shown, the stoppers for the cable.
Not sure yet if it will be four or six stoppers ...waiting for Dafi's expertise atm Wink but I like to show the progress I made today.

Okidoki, all six stoppers and, to fullfill Dr Dafi's request, the two dogstoppers are done.

Next task is to get cable and stoppers together in a natural looking way ... this will be fun ... not, haha Wink

I connected the stoppers to the portside anchor cable. Next will be starbord side and then the finetuning.

I could finish the 2nd cable, so some pictures of the whole arrangement Wink

Gun rigging ...

Rigging of the 2nd long gun finished. The coils are missing, this is something for later ... means: I have still no clue how to make natuaral looking coils ... I'll find out someday ...Big Grin

Made the two rings:

I always wondered a bit about the rigging for the steering, as it was kinda uncomfortable and found that:

Source: Harland, Seamanship, 1984, p.173

So it was time for a little deconstruction ... Wink The result:

First double, double stropped block ... double stropped because the right block would not have the right orientation ... damn that is small ...

Atm I'm not sure what I like more, light or dark sized blocks ...

Rudder pendants

Chains were shackled to eyes in the rudder, coming up each side of the rudder to under the transom.

To the end of the chains large rings were fitted and into these rings were hooked the rudder pendants.

These pendants had a thimble in each end with the hooks set round the thimbles.

The hooks were moused.

The pendants were seized to eyes or hooks set under the transom — one by the side of the rudder post, one half way along, and one under the quarter gallery.

The end of the pendants were seized to the after end of the mizen channels.

When required, a long tackle was hooked in the ends.

The fall hooked to an eyebolt in the mizen chains and led in through a port
==========================================

Hey guys, atm there is a bit of deconstruction going on. Related to the rudder there will be some changes.

As a short quote of my thoughts:

"Steel is exactly describing this. A chain connected to eyebolts left and right the rudder post. First task for this chain is securing the rudder in a e.g. ground contact sit. Connected to the chain are the rudder pendants, their task is to be able to rigg an emergency rudder via the rudder tackle. I think - even a lot of contemporary models contradict me - that this sounds the way to go, why a longer heavy chain if not neccessary for the emergency rig? . Keep it simple stupid, KISS."

As a result of this discussion:

Another part that needs more attention is again the steering rig. Unfortunately there is a mayor problem about the positioning of the aft blocks in Chucks plan (sorry mate!). It can't work this way because of a matter of geometry Wink

A good source for the problem is the NMM plan of the rig of the Hind 1814, check here: http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections...83775.html

[Image: Hind%2520%25281814%2529_Wye%2520%25281814%2529.jpg]

Adapted to the Syren it will look like this:

The orange dotted line is the max angle the rudder can have (I think it was about 32°), I think the rest is self explanatory, if not don't hesitate to ask Wink

I already made it a bit more this way without clear thinking weeks ago:

But still not enough. One solution might doing the tiller longer than now to get the right angles.

And now we are in even bigger trouble related to the chasers ...

Anyway some changes are needed Wink

cheers,

Dirk
