I do just 1.7 meters long rope at the moment so 2 meters are fine :-)

"Good" 4 strand rope (what is only needed for left handed shrouds on bigger vessels) is difficult as you might need a center strand or you can't lay it "hard" (it will try to fill the bigger space in-between the 4 strands and "jump" around). So three strands are fine for most we need.

cheers

Thanks, Dirk. I understand about the rare need for 4-strand. However I was looking at the various thicknesses that are achieved with 4 strands, and some of them suit well for a few of the sizes between 0.1 and 0.5mm. All the same, I think I can avoid the 4 strands!

Don't get me wrong I really would like to do good 4-strand but without a center strand it is quite difficult to get a good tight rope because of the effect you can see in the following image:

The strands want to fill the empty center.

With Skala (and Mara) it is possible to do a lot of different diameters though.

cheers

Very interesting. Thanks. I hadn't known that. Glad you experiment so much!

My actual list for Skala. For beige (color code 464) I prefer Skala 100% to Mara. Mara is way more fuzzy. For Dark Brown Rope (color code 696), Black (color code 000) or Anthrazit (color code Mara 36, Skala 702) what I will use in bigger diameters I might use Mara (Skala for the 0,2 & 0,3 mm diameters). Skala is here a bit too shiny maybe.

It's funny when some people say they don't see a difference between Mara and Skala .. I wonder if they really tested it, I don't think so :-P

So what do you guys need for 1:64 and 1:72 scale:

Skala 360, Color Codes: 464, 696, 702, 000
Skala 200, Color Codes: 464, 696, 702, 000
Skala 240, Color Codes: 464, 696, 702, 000 (if necessary)

Mara 120, Color Codes: 464, 696, 36, 000
Mara 220, Color Codes: 464, 696, 36, 000

You DON'T need: Mara 15, 30, 70, 100

DON'T try color 2889, it's a) getting to dark when doing tight small diameters, it's b) as a Gutermann Custom Color hard to get and expensive (Ok I could sell you mine if wanted :-D)

* Bigger Diameters are easy AND FAST to do (some people say the opposite, that's wrong)
* Smaller Diameters took way longer.
* On my Ropewalk a 1,7 meters rope takes around 5 Minutes to do. 3-4 Minutes for the bigger ones though.

cheers

Just one question. With the weights, do you mean 1.096gm or 1,096gm? I presume the latter, since it should make much difference to add about a gram to 500gm.

Ahhh in Germany we use the dot as thousand Separator :-)

It's 1096 (ca. 1 kg) Gramm, that's the weight of the sledge with motor.

cheers

In your tables of rope dimensions, when you say, for example, that Threads per Strand is 6 with number of strands 3, does this mean that each of the three strands is composed of six single threads, or are each of the strands already wound into rope of six strands? I presume it's the former, but thought I'd just check.

Exactly :-)
