Next the deck of the hold.

The deck is laminated of two parts, with all the disadvantages. It is hard to assemble - it will be even harder with the following decks - I used liquid CA here but could not align it perfectly. Next time, I’ll try using diluted wood glue, which I’ll brush onto both pieces and some heat then.

I didn’t manage to fit the deck in the hull very well either, so there are some gaps now.

I'm sure the gaps won't be noticed. I can see it's very fiddly at this scale. I find it hard on the Jacinthe at just 1:100. Compromises in detail such as block size are inevitable.

A quick update. Next up is the lower deck... and I (almost) ruined it... haha.

I spent a while thinking about the best way to glue it together. CA glue is usually the go-to choice, but I find (though that might change) that it sets too quickly, meaning you can’t position the pieces neatly – which I think is absolutely crucial here. Then I had this brilliant idea: I’d use diluted wood glue and “iron” it together. Not a good idea :-D Not at all! The result was a totally warped, wavy, awful-looking, poorly aligned piece of rubbish of a deck, and I was... furious :-P

First of all, I’m about to get a new one to give it another go. Thanks to Unicorn Model! Until then, I’ve a) tried to salvage the old deck and, in doing so, b) worked out the hopefully best way to handle the next decks better :-D

I’ve extended the jig. I soaked the botched deck thoroughly and then managed to get it into reasonably good shape after all, with a nice, clean curve.

The deck is then fitted into the hull using the following jig, which gives it another curve along the transverse axis. It’s tricky to get this to look visually balanced. I’ve absolutely no idea yet how to glue it in properly. Oh well, I’ve got a deck to practise on :-)

I've been through some of that type of problem before. First upset, then 'can I find a way round this?' Then try, Then fail. Then try again. Etc.

Looks good now, though!
