Some beauty shots :-)

Today I made the metal tiller. There is a photo etch part in the kit I don't think is completely thought through. It should be folded and then ...?
![]() ![]() Anyway I found a method that works for me. I folded at the other side direction, soldered the folded parts (green) and then soldered a brass strip (red) with the contour of the rudder head so that the parts fit the rudder head :-) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() cheers Dirk

Still missing on deck were the pumps. The kits pumps are a - sorry but serious? - joke. Why not 3D printing something appropriate? Would have been an easy imo.
Anyway, I can't use what came with the kit so I did my own pumps in brass. On the left the Kits 3D printed pumps. ![]() Need more practise but it works, had to do grooves around the brass tube to hold the rings in position, almost worked out. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After all I think the result is quite ok. ![]() ![]() ![]() cheers Dirk

Some beauty shots - hull complete I think :-) Next will be masting and doing rope for rigging.
![]() ![]() Pumps :-) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I really like the line of this ship :-) ![]() ![]() cheers Dirk
There is a carboard model of the Axel Thorsen in scale 1:72 by a seahorse.pl, as individual parts like the cannons and oars aren’t very expensive, I thought I’d give them a go to see what they’re like. When they arrived quickly (thanks for that, Seahorse!), I was a bit surprised as to why they were so much smaller than my parts?
![]() ![]() I then spent some time looking into it, checking the original plans and doing the maths, and realised that my kit is by no means 1:72 scale, but rather closer to 1:64. I can prove this by looking at the guns, a norwegian foot ist 0,31374 meters, so the gun has a length of 3,45114 meters: ![]() ![]() But also by the hull: ![]() ![]() Anyway, I carried on with making the masts and so on. All the necessary components are included in the kit. However, I a) didn’t want to work with cherry wood (some parts were already warped anyway) and b) I don’t like trying to make something round using these non-square components. I keep wondering why the kit designer can’t simply make the masts and spars longer, so that these parts can be clamped into a lathe. ![]() I tend to take the more traditional approach. Make square strips, mark out with my tools what needs to be removed for the octagonal shape.... ![]() By the way, I’ve also modified my Proxxon .... ![]() Then mill it into an octagon. ![]() And round it off on the lathe. ![]() This is what it looks like for now. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() cheers Dirk

Mast and spars are done. Cleats by DryDock. Not 100% happy. Especially not with the cherry wood (I don't like it compared to pear it is rough). Anyway, pictures :-)
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I will do the deadeyes and other metals tuff for the rig next, but won't rigg her soon. Polotsk Rigging first or another smaller kit :-) cheers Dirk

It's a while .... and frustration continues .. haha ... started the deadeyes with the chainplates ... and ... these are way to short tob be fixed at the whale ... ahhh come on ...
![]() So I had to scratch. ![]() ![]() Also the chainplates for the backstays. ![]() ![]() ![]() The boat that came with the kit is unfortunately a scale disaster ... never is this 1/72 or 1/64 ... so .. useless. Should be a small dinghy anyway. ![]() I painted the 3D printed oars by Seahorse and I used the massive storage cages, even you voted against, I prefer them as they have the same size as the stanchions. ![]() ![]() ![]() And the anchors were finished too. ![]() I will not rigg the Thorsen soon but I like to prepare and it was a good reason to undust my ropewalk and do some ... rope. That was fun and satisfying so I did a loooot of rope :-) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here are we now :-) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() cheers Dirk |
