As in between project (to much repetitive stuff with Syren and Sherbourne atm ... ) and as a XMAS gift for my father I started this little ship. The Maria HF 31 was a fishing Ewer from Hamburg/Finkenwerder. Thats very very close to where I live btw Wink Build 1880 she operated until 1950. During this period she has undergone several rebuildings, including motorization. The Ship is restored and has it's place in the "Deutsches Museum" in Munich.

Another reason for this build was my curiosity about the kits from Daniel Dusek. From what I read and saw on youtube they look very promising (and indeed, they are).

First some pictures of the parts.

PRO:

++ Very good Wood (Pear!!)
++ Very good laser cutting
++ Very good Photoetched Parts
++ Full lasered planks
++ Double Planking
++ Affordable
++ Solid construction

CONTRA:

-- Manual
-- The images on the packaging

(I will revise Pro/Contra while building if necessary)

There are all parts to build the Maria as Sailing Ewer or as motorized one. I will build the sailing version. I will try to build OOB but can't promise Big Grin I allready bought the book "Ewer Maria" with a lot of pictures and informations.

Actual State:

Started with the keel.

No warping

Preparing first planking

The plywood is undestroyable .. haha .. and very thin .. but ... not really bendable either Wink

No way to bend it to get the curve at the stern ... I'll try with sanding later

Starting the 2nd planking. It's pear veneer, very thin but robust. I really like the wood. Imo the best wood in a kit so far in my life.

The book

As of today

Cheers,

Portside done. Some minor mistakes but overall it looks nicely rough. There are some color issues with the wood after using danish oil I have to live with. No decision yet if the Maria gets paint.

One minor difficulty with this kind of kit is: How much laser char should or HAVE to be removed so that it fits. Some prechecking is useful here! Remark: Even the smallest part are so robust that it does not break while sanding down the laser char. I really like that!

I could finish the 2nd planking and the steering post.

There were a minor issues with the stern I had to improvise a bit

Deck is not glued yet but as an overall impression some pictures Wink

The kit is really fun to build I can absolutely recommend it and also Daniel Dusek is very kind and helpful!

cheers,

Dirk

It is absolutley hard to "pimp" this kit .. as allready so many pimping parts are part of.

Even the Nameplates are readable etched ... and this is damn small ... (btw good, so I don't need to make them Big Grin .. hahaha)

I did the keel plates and the hawse holes. Deck will take some more time as Daniel send me a new one with a bit better laserstructure. His support is great btw. And to sound a bit more commercial ... Maria is on sale right now, EURO is bad to Dollar ...hmpf ... so I suggest get the kit ... I mean guys it is a fishing ewer from HAMBURG .. MY Hometown Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Anyway, pix:

Hawse Holes.

BTW I'm pretty sure atm that the Maria gets painted ...

I did it Big Grin Haha ... Heartbeating before ...

The white parts were tricky ... may need a bit more love though.

cheers,

Dirk

While waiting for my new deck I started the deck fittings. These are all models of their own.

Tiny but fun to build.

And here ... taddaaaa ... my first little pimp. The binnacle in munich looks a bit different then the kit ones, so ...

Yesterday I started on the windlass. Short Story: I will redo this part soon.

Long Story:

First I decided to break parts as these is more on the original construction of a windlass:

Next I decided to redo these parts with pear.

A lot of nice details are provided

But you might start seeing "my problem"

It's the wrong wood for parts like this. This kinda nut wood is way to soft and with way to big pores ....

But ... Daniel Dusek is so kind for a small amount of money to laser these parts with pear Smile
He is also considering to offer these lasered pear parts as special parts to buy if wanted. I like that much! Smile

As it allready was not the best building day ... I f***ed up on the name too ... damn ...

Sanded it down to a kinda "used look" ... but no idea what to do now ... re´doing completely ... used look ... I have to see ...

best,

Dirk

Today was/is not my day either ... damn ..

Wanted to build the otters and tried my silver soldering skills went fine until the end ... 1sec to much .. burned .. hmpf ...

As you can see I pimped a bit here too. Also used a small chain.

Anyway need to try again though ...

cheers,

Dirk

First a shot Maria together with Syren Wink

I then build the second otter, this time I used mainly CA only the triangle thingy was silver soldered. Together with my micro chain this is the only part I changed. The etch part is too flat imo.

And it is macro proof, yeah Smile

The details possible with this kit are really great an well thought, there is only very very small room left for improvements!

Today the new deck arrived, much better imo, couldn't wait and so ... Thanks to Daniel Dusek for his great support!

So now that the deck is installed more inboard stuff has to be made. First at the bow. A little sandwich building Wink

After sanding.

It's a bot different ment by the kit but as I have always problems with these angles I fake a bit Tongue

And on the other side things has to be done too Smile

cheers,

Dirk

A bit more things build. First the knee. I made it lot thicker then the kit ones afther checking pictures from the original boat.

And the strip under the caprails made

Oiled. Always exciting how the wood turns out. This pear gets quite dark but I like that Smile

More stuff Smile I decided to redo some of the nut wood parts with boxwood but first made a template for the deck to get the positions.

Preparation for painting ...

More boxwood parts Big Grin

First of all I got the new parts made in pear by Daniel. I only can recommend everybody who wants to buy and build the Maria to ask Daniel for the pear parts. The little money is more than worth it!

Today I finished the deck so here are the pictures. Whenever you have questions don't hesitate to ask me!

Hawse hole inner ... reusing stuff Tongue

Made hooks seen on the original boat ...

Painted

I also started on the windlass V2.0. Even Daniel was so kind to send me the sides as 3part Sides (Thanks Daniel!!) I first tried a differen approach with the one piece sides. Small cuts and the sanding down the knee a bit. It's easy to do but gives a big effect imo.

After oiled and with my loved micro rivets

More work to do Wink

cheers,

Dirk

It is indeed a very fun and nice project. Well designed & nice details!

And before going to bed a little work on the capstan. Again a well thought part with nice etched detail on the base.

Finished the capstan today. I tried to do it mostly OOB but there is room for pimping Smile

The silver paint got a bit weathering with black. I also added kinda waterway at the bow according to a picture from the original.

Then some more love for the bow.

Totals

Completed the part on the bow, made the hole for the bowsprite.

Redoing rudder stuff with pear.

Started on the rudder hinges. Some silver soldering and my beloved micro tubes (inner diameter 0.5mm)Smile

After blackening

cheers,

Dirk
