More progress on the upper deck. As is so often the case, the kit manufacturers do not take into account that there can be slight dimensional differences in such a complex model and do not design their parts with slight oversizes where it would make sense to be able to sand the down until they fit. The Double Lodging Knees are quite fragmented now, as they way way too small, unfortunately. Still unhappy about the sandwiched beams ...

And don't rely on the Chinese manual to much, stuff like the hatch is there shown totally wrong.





























I also did the base and the case in my usual style :-)

The upper deck were finished, the hanging knees will follow when the deck is glued in the hull (I thought about doing the deck removeable but that will not work unfortunately). That will be some fun ... haha ... not. I really








Then the Mortar were built and painted, all the metalwork will follow later. I also finished the Mortar Housing and decides to go like it is in the kit and the Goodwin Book.






Lot's of adjustments were necessary (Side Covers - I might redo them completely later) and some parts just don't fit (canopy planks - the laser kerf problem) or were wrong (inner Canopy Transom). Nothing will be glued, everything is removeable.

For the deck planking I will use (American) Holly and the planking will be removeable too.

The kits inboard planking is very simplified, no waterway no spirketting. I did not like that and orientated myself on the drawings from the Anatomy of the Ship.

It looks easy after it is done but took a good while to build. No kit material were used. I learned a lot about errors I made at the beginning of the build and I am not 100% satisfied with the result but think it is "ok".

I also did some of the eyebolts and rings. The kit ones are way to oversized though.

Edit: Damn I followed the MSB Drawings when building the spirketting, should have checked AOTS better. The spirketting needs to be up to the gunports ... it's to low. Nothing I can/will change in this state ...

I don't know the details of the bomb vessel waterway and spirketting. Is this a bit unusual in that the two separate pieces are joined at the junction rather than the waterway curving round the join between the wall and the deck? The AOTS of the cutter Alert has a good description of what I mean as follows:

"Internally, waterways were wrought along the bulwarks over the ends of the upper deck beams; these formed a watertight seal between the deck planking and the ship's side. Directly above the waterway a deep band of planking called the spirketting was worked up to the level of the sheer rail
which coincided with the gunport sills. Spirketting was generally wrought top and butt fashion."

Yes, that's what I meant. The waterway has an upward curve to protect the water from getting under the planks. The way you have done it seems to show the joint going right down to the corner. But I agree it would not be noticed if looking at it from above. And the original drawings may indeed show it like that. I was just wondering if that was the way it was done originally. It's still a beautiful build, despite the problems you came across.

I started the outboard planking. Here the kit is missing the Upper Main Wale - I will do next - instead there is a simple plank. Filing the sweep ports - I hate this :-) - needs to be done too but it might be that I just fake the ports outside.

Upper Main Wale, Filling Wale and Lower Main Wale done. The kit whale parts are to long so the lasered nails are not fitting. I just turned the parts. Want real nails anyway :-)
